Wheat...West coast cash wheat prices reflected recent strength across
the futures complex in early-week trade, posting gains of 15 to 20 cents
relative to a week ago. White wheat basis has been a bit defensive, with
the spot spread to Chicago narrowing a dime over the past week.
Crop Progress...Wheat conditions slipped yet again across the Pacific
Northwest, with the three-state index down 2 points to 97% of the 20-year
average. Idaho good to excellent slipped a point to 71%, Washington was
off 6% to 61% and Oregon dropped 4% to 37%. Winter wheat harvest is now
underway for all three states, on track with the average pace.
Shipments...Weekly export inspections revealed a marked slowdown in
U.S. wheat shipments during the holiday shortened week, coming in at
just 4.8 million bushels. Current year loadings of 55 million bushels
stand 18% behind a year ago. Soft red winter accounted for most of the
liftings last week with 2.7 million bushels. West coast exporters were
focused on corn shipments of more than 20 million bushels last week as
there was no wheat loaded out.
